On September 6, 2024, the University of Ruhuna’s Faculty of Agriculture was the
venue for a groundbreaking training program aimed at Kithul entrepreneurs from
the Matara, Hambanthota, and Galle districts. The event, which ran from 9:00 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m., 38 local entrepreneurs come together to gain hands-on experience and
expert knowledge in producing Kithul-based products such as Kithul chocolate and
Kithul syrup.
The training was spearheaded by Professor Nilanth Liyanage, a leading authority
in agricultural innovations, and Mr. Samantha Mirando, a renowned expert in
Kithul product development. Their combined expertise provided participants with
valuable insights into the intricacies of Kithul sap processing and product creation.
Program Highlights:
Interactive Workshops: Attendees took part in interactive sessions where
they learned the detailed processes of making Kithul chocolate and syrup.
The workshops were designed to be practical, allowing entrepreneurs to
engage directly with the production techniques.
Product Development: The program included segments on product
innovation, focusing on how to diversify product lines and incorporate
modern trends into traditional Kithul products. Participants explored
methods to enhance flavor profiles and health benefits.
Business Skills: In addition to product training, the program offered
valuable business acumen. Entrepreneurs received guidance on marketing
strategies, branding, and establishing effective distribution channels to
expand their market reach.
Sustainability Focus: Emphasis was placed on sustainable practices in
Kithul palm harvesting and processing. The training highlighted methods to
ensure environmental sustainability while maintaining the economic
viability of the Kithul industry.
Professor Liyanage expressed his enthusiasm for the program’s success, stating,
“Our goal was to equip these entrepreneurs with the skills necessary to innovate
and excel in their field. The positive engagement and eagerness to learn from the
participants reflect the program’s impact and its importance for the local
economy.”
Mr. Mirando echoed these sentiments, adding, “The potential for Kithul products is
immense. By combining traditional techniques with modern practices, we can help
these entrepreneurs unlock new opportunities and contribute to the industry’s
growth.”
Feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive. “This training has
provided us with the tools and knowledge to enhance our products and business
strategies,” said a Kithul farmer. “We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from
experts and look forward to applying these insights to our businesses.”
