The Palmyrah Research Institute successfully conducted a specialized training program on palmyra leaf handicrafts, benefiting 30 entrepreneurs from Jaffna and Kilinochchi. The training took place from September 30th to October 4th, aiming to enhance skills and promote sustainable livelihoods through traditional crafts.
Participants engaged in hands-on workshops, learning techniques to create a variety of handicrafts from palmyra leaves, which are known for their durability and versatility. The program not only equipped entrepreneurs with valuable skills but also emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage through craftsmanship.
In addition to the training in Jaffna, another session is scheduled for 30 entrepreneurs from Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, and Mannar. This training will take place in Vavuniya from October 7th to 11th, further extending the reach of the initiative. The workshops are designed to foster community engagement and economic development in the region.
Both training programs highlight the commitment of the Palmyrah Research Institute to empower local artisans and promote the use of indigenous materials in handicraft production. As these entrepreneurs develop their skills, they are expected to contribute to local economies and create unique products that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Northern Sri Lanka.
The initiatives are part of broader efforts to revitalize traditional crafts and provide sustainable income opportunities in the region, ensuring that the art of Palmyra leaf handicraft continues to thrive.
